How do I get an alert when my child leaves school or home?

Last updated:

Short answer

Use an app that supports place alerts (also called geofences): you draw a circle around the school or home once, and your phone gets a notification each time your child's phone enters or leaves it. In SAFE this is Add new zone, and every arrival and departure is saved in a log.

Setting up a school alert in SAFE

  1. 1Link your child's phone with SAFE Child first (see the location guide).
  2. 2In SAFE Parent, choose your child and tap Add new zone.
  3. 3Move the pin to the school, name it (for example "School") and save.
  4. 4Repeat for home, the grandparents' house, a club or any place you care about.
  5. 5From now on you get a notification on arrival and departure, and you can open the zone log to see every time.

Tips for accurate alerts

  • Make the circle a little bigger than the building. Phone GPS can be off by tens of meters, especially indoors.
  • Make sure the child's phone allows location "all the time" and is not stopping the app to save battery.
  • If alerts arrive late, check that your own phone allows notifications from SAFE Parent.

Free alternatives

Google Family Link and Google Maps can share location and, in some countries, notify you when someone arrives at or leaves a place. If that is enough for you, start there. SAFE adds a full log of arrivals and departures, the day route, speed and battery alerts, and an SOS button in one app.

Frequently asked questions

How many places can I add?

You can add several places for each child, such as school, home and relatives' homes.

Does my child have to open the app for alerts to work?

No. SAFE Child runs in the background, as long as the phone's battery settings don't stop it.

Can the mother get the alerts too?

Yes. Add her as a free second parent, and choose which permissions she gets.
