How do I protect my child from calls by unknown numbers?

Last updated:

Short answer

Turn on blocking for hidden or private numbers in the child's phone app, teach your child not to answer or call back unknown numbers, and use an app such as SAFE that alerts you when a number not saved in contacts calls your child and lets you block that number.

Built-in Android settings

  • Google Phone app: Settings, then Blocked numbers, then turn on blocking for unknown (hidden) callers.
  • Samsung Phone app: Settings, then Block numbers, then turn on blocking for unknown and private numbers.
  • These settings block hidden numbers only. A stranger calling from a normal number still gets through.

Alerts and blocking with SAFE

Calls are shown from the moment call monitoring was turned on.

  1. 1In SAFE Parent, choose your child and open Calls.
  2. 2You get an alert when a number that is not saved in your child's contacts calls them.
  3. 3Open the call log to see the time, the number and how long the call lasted.
  4. 4Tap Block on any number you don't want calling your child.

What to teach your child

  • Don't share your name, address, school or photos with someone you don't know.
  • If a caller asks for a secret, a meeting or a code from a message, end the call and tell a parent.
  • Never send money or gift card codes to anyone on the phone.

Frequently asked questions

Does SAFE record calls?

No. SAFE shows alerts and a call log with numbers, times and duration. It does not record what is said.

Can I block a number from my own phone?

Yes. Open Calls in SAFE Parent and tap Block next to the number.

Will my child know a number is blocked?

SAFE is transparent, so we recommend telling your child which numbers you blocked and why.
