Short answer
On Android you can set daily limits or block apps like TikTok with Google Family Link, TikTok's own Family Pairing, or a parental control app such as SAFE. With SAFE you open App usage, choose the app and set a daily or weekly limit, or block it entirely, and focus mode blocks distractions during study and bedtime.
Options and what each one does
- Digital Wellbeing (in Android settings): app timers on the same phone. Easy, but a child can turn them off.
- Google Family Link: free, with daily limits, downtime, blocking apps and approving new installs, for supervised Google accounts.
- TikTok Family Pairing: inside TikTok, link your account to your child's to set a time limit and restricted mode. It only covers TikTok.
- SAFE: limits and blocking for any app, schedules, focus mode, and daily and weekly reports with a smart summary.
Limiting or blocking an app with SAFE
- 1In SAFE Parent, choose your child and open App usage, then View all apps.
- 2Choose the app, for example TikTok or a game.
- 3Set a Daily limit or a Weekly limit, or turn on Block the app entirely, then Save limits.
- 4For study time and bedtime, open Focus mode and set the hours when distracting apps are blocked.
- 5Check the daily and weekly report to see which apps take the most time.
Making limits work at home
- Agree on the rules with your child before turning them on, and explain why.
- Start with a limit close to today's usage, then lower it step by step.
- Keep phones out of the bedroom at night. That alone fixes a lot of sleep problems.
Frequently asked questions
What happens when my child opens a blocked app?
The app is blocked on the child's phone and the attempt is saved in the block log, so you can see it.
Can I allow more time on the weekend?
Yes. Use a weekly limit, or change the daily limit when you want to.
How old should my child be to use TikTok?
TikTok's own terms require users to be at least 13. Younger children should not have an account.
